La otra mirada ibérica: “La Eloísa portuguesa” de Emilia Pardo Bazán, Ana de Castro Osório y Alice Pestana

Abstract

This chapter highlights the importance of a set of Iberian relationships, specifically Luso-Hispanic ones, led by Emilia Pardo Bazán (1851–1921), Ana de Castro Osório (1872–1935), and Alice Pestana (1860–1929), which took place in two Spanish periodicals, La España Moderna (1889–1914) and Revista de la Raza (1915–1935). From the modern peripheral peninsular situation, within an international geocultural framework, and in decisive articulation with another marginality that here becomes central, the female gaze, the text that Emilia Pardo Bazán dedicates to the Portuguese nun Mariana Alcoforado, “The Portuguese Héloïse,” the articles by Ana de Castro Osório commenting on the advantages of an “Iberian alliance,” and the novel Genoveva Montaña by Alice Pestana allow us, as a whole, to discover an Iberist female perspective that constitutes one of the most significant manifestations of the countercultural impetus of peninsular modernism, offering an especially incisive and critical view of the models and values of modern capitalist, cosmopolitan, urban, and bourgeois society.
