autor pretendia compreender e questionou sempre.
The "Craft" as a creative process: the example of Barrística. Contribution to a reflection
on creativity - Abstract: As a self-taught ceramist and caricaturist for almost three decades, beginning in the potteries
of S. Pedro do Corval, Reguengos de Monsaraz, the artistic work of the author of
this thesis, always of unique piece, is considered very distinctive and immediately recognizable.
This characteristic, in a way, reveals a singular creativity that, even when representing
the most common themes of crafts and folk art, the author would represent in a way different
from his peers. Now, it is precisely this personal creativity and its eventual mechanisms
that the author sought to understand and always questioned. How do they arise?
How do they manifest themselves? What is at their origin? Is it the same for other artists?
Continuing the previous research work in Cabeça (2018) on the distinction between crafts
and figurative art in clay, the author now attempts to deepen these concepts by proposing
an interpretation for the phenomenon of creativity in popular figurative clay art.
We will see in this thesis how clay is an extraordinary means of expression. We will also
see how creativity is a phenomenon that leads us to express ourselves. But creativity is
not a characteristic only of human beings. Increasingly, recent studies confirm that creativity
is in fact a powerful cerebellar tool for adaptation and survival in many animal
species, which use it to find solutions to fundamental existential problems. Humans are
one of the few species, apparently, that also use it to express themselves symbolically or,
as we can say in another way: that use creativity to create art. In this thesis, which has the History of Art as its backbone, we resort to trans disciplinarity
to try to find patterns of human behaviour that may show us that, despite disparate chronologies
and cultural contexts, apparently the creative responses of art, in clay, by human
beings, are identical, which may demonstrate a possible biological genesis of clay art. Put
another way: that art may, in fact, have a biological origin and not just a cultural one. |
