Design and Sizing of an Islanded Photovoltaic System with Battery Storage and Diesel
Generator -
The present dissertation aims to carry out the technical design, equipment selection, simulation and
economic evaluation of an off-grid photovoltaic system intended to supply the energy demand of a
rural accommodation facility located in Torrão, within the municipality of Alcácer do Sal. The case
study corresponds to Hotel Rural – Quinta da Horta Velha, whose operation will commence in a
phased manner, as the facility is still under construction. This condition requires a transitional
photovoltaic solution capable of supplying the energy demand associated with the first construction
phase while ensuring the possibility of future expansion.
Initially, a characterization of the installation site, the available solar resource and the energy
demand of the entire rural accommodation facility was performed. Subsequently, the energy
consumption associated with the first construction phase was analysed, enabling the system to be
sized in order to meet the expected demand without compromising future expansion. Following the
load assessment, the photovoltaic generator, battery bank, battery inverters, diesel generator,
cabling and AC and DC electrical protection systems were sized. The proposed solution comprises
a 64.48 kWp photovoltaic system consisting of 104 JA Solar 620 W modules, one SMA STP 50-80
grid-connected inverter, six SMA Sunny Island SI 6.0H battery inverters, 20 Dyness PowerBrick
Plus batteries and one Himoinsa diesel generator.
The technical validation of the proposed design was carried out using the PVsyst software, allowing
the performance of the system to be assessed. The results demonstrated that a significant share of
the energy demand can be supplied by the photovoltaic system, with the backup generator being
required only during periods of energy deficit.
Finally, an economic analysis was conducted using two different methodologies: the economic
assessment provided by the PVsyst simulation and an Excel-based calculation tool given during the
master’s programme. Three scenarios were compared: a grid-connected system without batteries, a
grid-connected system with batteries and an off-grid system. The results showed that the gridconnected solution without batteries presents the most favourable financial indicators. However,
despite its higher initial investment, the off-grid solution proved to be the most suitable option for
achieving the objectives defined for Hotel Rural – Quinta da Horta Velha. It can therefore be
concluded that the off-grid photovoltaic system represents the most advantageous technical
solution, while the less favourable economic indicators are mainly associated with the system
oversizing required to accommodate the future expansion of the facility. |
