De Instituto de Antropologia a Museu Câmara Cascudo: trajetórias científicas no Rio Grande do Norte, Brasil (1950-2010)

Abstract

Esta tese analisa a trajetória do Instituto de Antropologia da Universidade do Rio Grande do Norte, posteriormente Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), desde as condições que antecederam a sua criação, em 1960, até à transformação no Museu Câmara Cascudo (MCC), formalizada em 1973, e às configurações assumidas pela instituição até 2010. A partir de fontes institucionais, publicações, imprensa, fotografias e vestígios materiais, reconstrói a formação do Instituto, o seu funcionamento científico e as mudanças que acompanharam a criação do Museu. A investigação mostra que o IA se constituiu como um espaço científico multidisciplinar, no qual a produção de conhecimento se articulava com a formação de investigadores, o trabalho coletivo, a constituição de coleções e as relações de cooperação estabelecidas com outras instituições. A criação do MCC não correspondeu a uma simples mudança de denominação, ao abandono da investigação ou à continuidade inalterada do Instituto. A nova configuração modificou a posição administrativa da instituição, redefiniu parte das suas funções e conferiu maior centralidade às responsabilidades museológicas, ao mesmo tempo que manteve, em graus distintos, profissionais, práticas, infraestruturas, coleções e redes anteriormente constituídas. Essa combinação de mudanças e continuidades assumiu a forma de uma reconfiguração institucional, cujos efeitos se prolongaram pelas décadas seguintes. Ao relacionar a trajetória científica do IA com as transformações da Universidade e com os processos de musealização desenvolvidos no MCC, a tese amplia o conhecimento sobre a ciência universitária e os museus universitários no Brasil; - FROM THE INSTITUTE OF ANTHROPOLOGY TO THE CÂMARA CASCUDO MUSEUM: SCIENTIFIC TRAJECTORIES IN RIO GRANDE DO NORTE, BRAZIL (1950-2010) Jacqueline Souza Silva ABSTRACT: This thesis examines the trajectory of the Institute of Anthropology of the University of Rio Grande do Norte, later the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), from the circumstances preceding its establishment in 1960 to its transformation into the Câmara Cascudo Museum (MCC), formally enacted in 1973, and the institutional configurations it assumed until 2010. Drawing on institutional sources, publications, newspapers, photographs, and material evidence, the study reconstructs the formation of the Institute, its scientific activities, and the changes that accompanied the creation of the Museum. The research shows that the IA developed as a multidisciplinary scientific institution in which knowledge production was closely connected to the training of researchers, collective work, the formation of collections, and cooperation with other institutions. The creation of the MCC did not constitute a mere change of name, the abandonment of research, or the unaltered continuation of the Institute. The new configuration changed the institution’s administrative position, redefined some of its functions, and gave greater prominence to its museological responsibilities, while preserving, to varying degrees, professionals, practices, infrastructure, collections, and previously established networks. This combination of change and continuity constituted an institutional reconfiguration whose effects extended over the following decades. By relating the scientific trajectory of the IA to transformations within the University and to the processes of musealisation developed at the MCC, the thesis broadens knowledge of university-based science and university museums in Brazil.
