| Abstract: | Esta tese reconstrói a modernização científica portuguesa a partir do Instituto Superior Técnico
a prática experimental traduziu o desejo de participar na reconstrução científica europeia; - Abstract: Title: The Instituto Superior Técnico and the Internationalisation of University Schools –
Scientific Policy and Laboratory Practices (1945-1974)
This thesis reconstructs the process of scientific modernisation in Portugal through the Instituto
Superior Técnico between 1945 and 1974, viewing laboratories as spaces of practice, circulation
and diplomacy. Through object biographies and individual trajectories, it retraces networks of
training and collaboration that sustained the internationalisation of science in Portugal, while
also examining the gender differences present in these trajectories. The study of research
placements in France, Sweden and the United Kingdom reveals experimental learning as a form
of technical diplomacy and European integration. The IUPAC International Congress of Analytical
Chemistry, held in Lisbon in 1956, confirmed the existence of a school of analytical chemistry
capable of engaging with the European scientific community and of mobilising the country
around research. Modernisation thus emerges as a process lived within laboratories, where
experimental practice expressed the desire to take part in Europe’s scientific reconstruction. |
