| Abstract: | Chinese export wallpapers represent a remarkable expression of transcultural artistic production
between the mid-eighteenth and mid-nineteenth centuries. Produced in China exclusively for
Western markets, these artifacts combined traditional Chinese painting materials and techniques
with foreign decorative preferences, resulting in hybrid works that embodied both artistic
exchange and global trade dynamics. Despite their historical and artistic significance, scientific
studies on their materials, manufacturing techniques, and conservation remain limited.
This thesis contributes to addressing this gap through the multidisciplinary investigation of two
case studies in Portugal: a set of six wallpaper panels preserved at the National Museum of
Ancient Art (MNAA) in Lisbon and a second set from a private collection in Arraiolos. A
methodological approach combining non-invasive in-situ analyses, micro-sampling, and
laboratory-based techniques was developed to characterise the paper supports, painting
materials, manufacturing techniques, and conservation condition of both sets.
The analyses demonstrated that both sets are consistent with the Chinese painting tradition,
particularly in terms of the pigments, dyes, and painting techniques employed. At the same time,
the comparative investigation revealed significant differences. While the MNAA wallpapers retain
their original structure and materials, the Arraiolos panels display extensive later interventions,
including a possible later addition of the upper sections executed on a different paper support
and repainted with modern pigments introduced during the twentieth century. These findings
not only provide new insights into the manufacture and conservation history of the two sets but
also highlight the importance of material analysis in distinguishing original components from later
restorations.
Beyond the technical characterisation of the wallpapers, this research demonstrates how heritage
science supports both informed conservation strategies and the broader valorisation of cultural
heritage, contributing to a deeper understanding of Chinese export wallpapers as material

Produzidos
do comércio global.
