Perceções do contributo das telecomunicações para o desenvolvimento Sustentável em São Tomé e Príncipe: O Caso da CST

Abstract

As telecomunicações, surgidas com a ciência moderna, são importantes infraestruturas, diferentes das tradicionais. Quer no mercado internacional ou doméstico, quer na comunicação organizacional ou pessoal, as telecomunicações são a principal forma de manter o fluxo contínuo e instantâneo de partilha de informações, notícias e circulação de dados entre diferentes territórios e dinamização e mobilização das populações. Na perspetiva empresarial e das atividades económicas, as telecomunicações têm influência relevante na economia em termos de PIB per capita, de serviço à comunidade e à sociedade e de criação de oportunidades de emprego. Ou seja, de elementos importantes para melhorar o desenvolvimento económico, sobretudo se potenciados com investimento no desenvolvimento de infraestruturas e boa aplicação das receitas das telecomunicações. Por estas razões, as telecomunicações são um sector estratégico e fundamental ao desenvolvimento sustentável de qualquer país do mundo. Este trabalho tem como objetivo geral procurar conhecer as perceções do contributo das telecomunicações para o desenvolvimento sustentável em São Tomé e Príncipe (STP), tendo como caso de estudo a Companhia Santomense de Telecomunicações (CST). Para analisar este contexto de forma mais ampla e fiável, o estudo centrou-se numa abordagem qualitativa que incluiu distintas fases e usou informação oriunda de fontes secundárias (pesquisa bibliográfica e documental e estatística) e primárias (observação e entrevistas a especialistas e principais atores no sector das telecomunicações). Whether in the international or domestic market, whether in organizational or personal communication, telecommunications are the main way of maintaining the continuous and instantaneous flow of information sharing, news and data circulation between different territories and dynamiting and mobilizing populations. From a business and economic activity perspective, telecommunications have a relevant influence on the economy in terms of GDP per capita, service to the community and society and the creation of employment opportunities. In other words, important elements to improve economic development, especially if boosted with investment in infrastructure development and good use of telecommunications revenues. For these reasons, telecommunications are a strategic and fundamental sector for the sustainable development of any country in the world. The general objective of this work was to seek the perceptions of the contribution of telecommunications to sustainable development in São Tomé and Príncipe (STP), using the Companhia Santomense de Telecommunications (CST) as a case study. To analyse this context in a broader and more reliable way, the research focused on a qualitative approach that included distinct phases and used information from secondary sources (bibliographic and documentary research and statistics) and primary sources (observation and interviews with experts and key actors in the telecommunications sector). The results allow us to conclude that CST, the main telecommunications operator, makes a relevant and positive contribution to the sustainable development of STP.
