Uma história contada em imagens: a narrativa histórica em azulejaria

Abstract

A azulejaria portuguesa do período barroco legou-nos um alargado número de conjuntos que representam eventos da História de Portugal. De norte a sul do país, encontramos núcleos que relatam a história de personalidades ilustres e de membros da linhagem real, de casas monásticas ou famílias nobres, de eventos recentes os mais afastados no tempo. Para a apreensão do seu significado, é necessário entender estes programas enquanto narrativas visuais cujo sentido é necessário clarificar. Os programas decorativos são manifestação de uma cultura erudita e produto de uma reflexão intelectual, constatando-se a importância do discurso visual na época. Os programas históricos são indissociáveis da produção historiográfica, pelo que só a sua análise permite compreender o conteúdo do que nos é apresentado e perceber os sentidos que nos são comunicados pelas personalidades e comunidades que os conceberam. Os conjuntos de azulejos reproduzem, em termos visuais, os temas, personagens e concepções do passado. São expressão dos intuitos políticos e sociais dos seus encomendadores, revelando as aspirações de distintos agentes, sejam eles religiosos, civis ou a casa real. Este estudo tem como propósito compreender de que modo a história se faz imagem no período barroco, tendo em conta o contexto social e ambiência cultural dos intervenientes. E de como Portugal se viu através da arte e através da história; A story told in picture: the historical narrative in portuguese tiles - Abstract: Portuguese tiles from the Baroque period have left us with many sets that represent events in the History of Portugal. From the north to the south of the country, we find sections that tell the story of honourable personalities and members of the royal lineage, of monastic houses or noble families, of recent events or events that are more distant in time. To grasp their meaning, it is necessary to understand these programs as visual narratives whose meaning needs to be clarified. The decorative programs are an expression of an erudite culture and a product of intellectual reflection, demonstrating the importance of visual discourse at the time. Historical programs are inseparable from historiographical production, so only their analysis allows us to understand the content of what is presented to us and understand the meanings that are communicated to us by the personalities and communities that created them. The sets of tiles reproduce, in visual terms, the themes, characters and conceptions of the past. They are an expression of the political and social intentions of their commissioners, revealing the aspirations of the different actors, whether religious, civil or the royal house. The aim of this study is to understand how history was created in the Baroque period. And how Portugal saw itself through art and history.
