Abstract

MESTRES E SONS LUSITANOS é uma série documental em seis episódios financiada pela República Portuguesa - Cultura | Direção-Geral das Artes, que retrata a biografia de seis compositores portugueses dos séculos XVIII e XIX cujas obras ficaram famosas na época, dentro e fora de Portugal. Nos dias de hoje, estas obras estão em estado de hibernação, na escuridão dos depósitos e dos arquivos, longe dos ouvidos do público e das luzes dos palcos. Nesta série documental, foram filmadas centenas de documentos históricos e dezenas de entrevistas com historiadores, músicos e musicólogos, para redescobrir a vida e as obras destes compositores. Trata-se de uma nova forma de contar a história da música portuguesa e de divulgar o património musical português ao público. O Episódio 5 é um documentário dedicado a Marcos Portugal e teve a segunda antestreia em Évora, na Escola de Artes da Universidade de Évora, a 21 de maio de 2025, à qual se seguiu uma conversa com o realizador, a autora da série e o entrevistado David Cranmer. Este documentário leva-nos numa viagem pelo passado à descoberta da vida e da obra de Marcos Portugal, compositor lisboeta que esteve sempre ao serviço da família real e cuja vida e carreira foram afetadas pelos grandes eventos da história de Portugal do início do século XIX. Marcos Portugal viajou por duas vezes para Itália onde ganhou fama com as suas óperas. Viveu as invasões espanholas e francesas da transição do século XVIII para o século XIX. O filme conta como o compositor cedeu às exigências de Napoleão e as circunstâncias da sua ida para o Brasil, onde viveu os últimos anos da sua vida como uma celebridade. / LUSITANIAN MASTERS AND SOUNDS is a six-episode documentary series funded by the Portuguese Republic - Culture | Directorate-General for the Arts, which portrays the biographies of six Portuguese composers from the 18th and 19th centuries whose works became famous at the time, both inside and outside Portugal. Today, these works are in a state of hibernation, in the darkness of storage and archives, far from the ears of the public and the lights of the stage. In this documentary series, hundreds of historical documents and dozens of interviews with historians, musicians, and musicologists were filmed to rediscover the lives and works of these composers. It is a new way of telling the story of Portuguese music and disseminating Portuguese musical heritage to the public. Episode 5 is a documentary dedicated to Marcos Portugal and had its second preview in Évora, at the School of Arts of the University of Évora, on May 21, 2025, followed by a conversation with the director, the series' author, and the interviewee David Cranmer. This documentary takes us on a journey through the past to discover the life and work of Marcos Portugal, a Lisbon-born composer who was always at the service of the royal family and whose life and career were affected by the major events in early 19th-century Portuguese history. Marcos Portugal traveled to Italy twice, where he gained fame with his operas. He lived through the Spanish and French invasions of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The film recounts how the composer yielded to Napoleon's demands and the circumstances of his move to Brazil, where he lived the last years of his life as a celebrity.
