A igreja da Ordem Terceira de São Francisco de Elvas (1701-1800)

Abstract

A presente dissertação tem como objeto de estudo a igreja da Ordem Terceira de São Francisco de Elvas (1701-1800), com particular enfoque na análise das suas campanhas decorativas que articulam o mármore, o azulejo e a talha dourada. O estudo justifica-se pela importância patrimonial do templo e pelas significativas lacunas historiográficas existentes sobre o seu conjunto artístico. A problemática central questiona de que forma estas campanhas de obras refletem as tendências do Barroco em Portugal e expressam localmente a trilogia estética e litúrgica do catolicismo setecentista. Para tal, adota-se uma metodologia que conjuga a análise do espaço e das obras com uma investigação arquivística aprofundada, assente em fontes primárias inéditas da própria Ordem Terceira de São Francisco de Elvas, como livros de receita e despesa e inventários. A investigação estrutura-se em quatro capítulos, cobrindo o contexto histórico-artístico da Ordem Franciscana e da cidade de Elvas, a cronologia construtiva da igreja entre 1719 e 1770, e culminando numa análise aprofundada da talha dourada (esplendor do barroco), do mármore (elegância e tradição local) e do azulejo (iconografia e mestres setecentistas). Conclui-se que o estudo preenche uma lacuna ao propor uma leitura integrada e multidisciplinar do programa decorativo, que articula estética, contexto histórico e a espiritualidade franciscana, e contribui para o reconhecimento da importância histórica e simbólica do edifício no património religioso do Alentejo; - Church of the Third Order of Saint Francis in Elvas (1701-1800) Abstract: This dissertation studies the Church of the Third Order of Saint Francis in Elvas (1701-1800), with a particular focus on the analysis of its decorative campaigns that articulate marble, tilework (azulejo), and gilded woodcarving (talha dourada). The study is justified by the building's patrimonial importance and the significant historiographical gaps concerning its artistic ensemble. The central problem addresses how these building campaigns reflect the trends of the Baroque in Portugal and locally express the aesthetic and liturgical trilogy of 18th-century Catholicism. The methodology adopted combines a direct analysis of the space and the integrated artworks with in-depth archival research, based on previously unpublished primary sources from the Third Order of Saint Francis, such as income and expenditure ledgers and inventories. The investigation is structured into four chapters, covering the historical and artistic context of the Franciscan Order and the city of Elvas, the building chronology of the church between 1719 and 1770, and culminating in a comprehensive analysis of the gilded woodcarving (Baroque splendour), marble (elegance and local tradition), and tilework (iconography and 18th-century masters). The study concludes by filling a gap with an integrated and multidisciplinary reading of the decorative programme, articulating aesthetics, historical context, and Franciscan spirituality, and contributing to the recognition of the building's historical and symbolic importance within the religious heritage of Alentejo.
