Abstract: | This study presents the preliminary findings of 3D facies modelling for CO2 geological storage in the Lusitanian Basin, offshore Portugal. The work is part of the PilotSTRATEGY project funded by the EU Horizon 2020 program, which aims to advance the understanding of deep saline aquifers (DSA) for CO2 storage in Southern and Eastern Europe. The study focuses on a selected prospect in the northern sector of the Lusitanian Basin, characterized by promising geological formations for CO2 storage, such as the lower Cretaceous Torres Vedras Group and the upper Jurassic Alcobaça Formation. Due to limited seismic data, pixel-based simulation techniques—Sequential Indicator Simulation (SIS) and Truncated Gaussian Simulation (TGS)—were employed to model the facies distribution. The results highlight the potential of these formations for CO2 storage, despite data scarcity. Future work will focus on conditioning the models to additional secondary data to enhance their accuracy. The study underscores the importance of robust geological modelling in identifying viable CO2 storage sites and contributes to the broader efforts of achieving low-carbon economies. |
