Assessment of thyroid dysfunction and relationship with cholesterol and glycemia in patients
The thyroid is a gland that synthesizes the hormones Triiodothyronine (T3) and Thyroxine (T4), responsible for regulating multiple metabolic processes and subject to endocrine regulation by Thyrotropin (TSH), released by the pituitary gland. Thyroid dysfunction is associated with hyperthyroidism, when there is an excess production of thyroid hormones, or hypothyroidism, when there is a deficit of these hormones, and in some cases may be autoimmune, such as Graves’ disease and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.
The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of thyroid dysfunction in users registered in the Synlab-Alentejo database over a 2-year period (May 2021 to April 2023), as well as the influence of thyroid dysfunction on pathologies such as diabetes and atherosclerosis. A total of 8,125 records were analyzed and a 16% incidence of thyroid dysfunction was observed, with a prevalence in females (71%) and in the 60 and 80 age groups. |
