Abstract: | In recent years religious tourism has experienced great volatility. Although mostly faith motivated, it is not shielded from economic and natural factors. The thesis objective was to
identify the economic determinants that influence pilgrimages to Catholic Shrines and to
determine the relationship between the economy and religious tourism. Essay 1: a survey
revealed who are the visitors to the city of Fátima (Portugal). The importance attributed by
visitors to several economic factors and how they impact the expenses on travel was verified.
The destination security, crises, shopping, savings for travel, help to the local economy and
income influence expenses. Essay 2: The autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model, with
annual data from 1995 to 2018, indicated that demographic effects and household income
influence the number of pilgrims. Essay 3: through a vector autoregressive (VAR) model with
annual data from 1994 to 2018, the causal relationships of Granger between the number of
pilgrims, gross domestic product (GDP), unemployment rate, total population, and the
informational globalization index were verified. Unemployment and GDP had a unidirectional
relationship with the religious phenomenon. Bidirectional effects were found between
pilgrimages and the informational globalization index. Essay 4: The Panel ARDL model (with
29 countries and annual data from 2008 to 2017) indicated that economic growth and
international departures from the origin of pilgrims influence the number of international
pilgrims in the short- and long-term. The exchange rate influences the number of pilgrims in
the short-term. Unemployment influences the number of pilgrims in the long-term. Essay 5: the
Marian phenomenon of Aparecida (Brazil) was studied using an ARDL model (with monthly
data from 2012 to 2017). The household income, unemployment rate, and exchange rate
influence the number of visits to Aparecida in the short- and long-term. The search for
information (proxy of globalization) influences the number of visitors in the long-term; - PEREGRINAÇÕES A SANTUÁRIOS CATÓLICOS: ANÁLISE DOS
A segurança do destino, crises,
A taxa
de câmbio influencia o número de peregrinos no curto prazo. O desemprego influencia o
O rendimento e
as taxas de desemprego e de câmbio influenciam o número de visitas a Aparecida quer no curto
quer no longo prazo.
visitantes no longo prazo. |
