"Como membro de um corpo": o poder senhorial nobiliárquico no Alentejo como parte do sistema político do Portugal quatrocentista

Abstract

A presente tese analisa o lugar do senhorialismo nobiliárquico no âmbito do sistema político do Portugal quatrocentista. A análise tem como enquadramento espacial o território grosso modo correspondente ao atual Alentejo, espaço privilegiado para o aprofundamento desta questão devido à expansão e consolidação da senhorialização durante o século XV. Apesar disso, o quadro de interrogações definido tem uma abrangência mais alargada que a dimensão regional. Identificou-se a natureza dos poderes senhoriais, assentes em atributos judiciais e fiscais detidos pelos senhores sobre os homens e sobre o espaço; atributos que, se contribuíram para o reforço do poder régio nesta cronologia, não deixaram de ser também definidores da essência do estatuto e da distinção nobiliárquica. Discutiram-se as confluências e sobreposições existentes entre os poderes régio e senhorial, analisando-se igualmente o esforço empreendido pela monarquia em definir os âmbitos, limites e alcance de atuação dos poderes senhoriais, delimitando desta forma os espaços próprios de cada um desses poderes. Analisou-se o significado da criação e confirmação de senhorios pelos monarcas no âmbito das relações entre Coroa e nobreza durante o período, aferindo-se o contributo da posse de poderes senhoriais para a criação de hierarquias internas dentro da elite nobiliárquica, consoante o grau de proximidade de parentesco e serviço ao rei. Por fim, analisaram-se as relações entre poder senhorial e poder concelhio, sublinhando-se a profunda interdependência existente entre ambos. Concluiu-se pela importância dos poderes senhoriais enquanto instrumentos de governação e da doação desses poderes como mecanismo de enquadramento da nobreza na estrutura governativa da monarquia portuguesa; ABSTRACT: “Like the member of a body”: noble seignorial power in Alentejo as part of 15th century Portuguese political system This thesis analyzes the place of noble seignorialism within the political system of 15th century Portugal. The analysis has as its spatial framework the territory roughly corresponding to the current-day Alentejo, a privileged space for the study of this issue due to the expansion and consolidation of seignorial domains during this same period. Despite this, the defined analytical framework has a broader scope than the regional dimension. The nature of the seignorial powers was identified, which was based on judicial and fiscal attributes held by noble lords over men and space, attributes that, if they contributed to the reinforcement of the royal power in this chronology, also defined the essence of status and distinction between the nobility. The confluences and overlaps between royal and seignorial powers were discussed, as well as the effort made by the monarchy to define the scopes, limits and space of action of seignorial powers, an effort intended to circumscribe the proper spaces of each of these powers. The meaning of the creation and confirmation of lordships by the monarchs was analyzed in the context of the relations between Crown and nobility during the period, measuring the contribution of seignorial powers to the creation of internal hierarchies within the noble elite, a hierarchy that depended on the degree of closeness and service to the king. Finally, the relations between seignorial and municipal powers were analyzed, highlighting their deep interdependence. Seignorialism was seen as a subsystem of the broader monarchic political system, concluding by the importance of seignorial powers as instruments of governance and their donation as a mechanism to frame the nobility in the governing structure of the Portuguese monarchy at the end of the Middle Ages.
