Perceção dos seniores residentes em Lousada sobre a fauna menos carismática: anfíbios como caso de estudo

Abstract

Os animais pouco carismáticos são muitas vezes perseguidos e alvo de menos esforços de conservação pelo seu aspeto, pelos mitos e crenças a eles associados e/ou pela perceção errada da população. Neste estudo avaliamos a perceção dos seniores residentes em Lousada em relação aos anfíbios e recolhemos informações revelantes sobre outros grupos de animais também eles pouco carismáticos. Verificamos que os seniores não têm uma imagem negativa de todos os anfíbios e que a maioria está interessada em aumentar o seu conhecimento sobre estes animais. Encontramos também diferenças significativas entre homens e mulheres relativamente aos sentimentos que os seniores nutrem pelos anfíbios e verificamos que os seniores com atitudes negativas para com os anfíbios apresentaram mais sentimentos negativos em relação a estes animais. Estes resultados serão usados como um ponto de partida para atividades de educação ambiental mais direcionadas e, consequentemente, mais eficazes e pertinentes para os seniores do concelho; Abstract: Perception of seniors residing in Lousada about the less charismatic fauna: amphibians as a case study Uncharismatic animals are often persecuted and are the target of fewer conservation efforts due to their appearance, the myths and beliefs associated with them, and/or the wrong perceptions of the population. In this study, we evaluated the perception of seniors living in Lousada to amphibians and collected relevant information about other groups of animals that are also less charismatic. We found that seniors do not have a negative image of all amphibians and that most are interested in increasing their knowledge about these animals. There were significant differences between men and women regarding the feelings that seniors have towards amphibians, and we also found that seniors with negative attitudes towards amphibians had more negative feelings towards these animals. These results will be used as a starting point for more targeted environmental education activities and, consequently, more effective, and relevant for seniors in the municipality.
