Abstract: | For several decades the transport sector has been a major contributor to increased emissions of air pollutants and noise. The transport sector, like that of industry, is one of the sectors with the greatest energy consumption and a strong dependence on non-renewable energy resources. The energy consumption of the transport sector in Portugal is approximately 42% of the final energy consumption in the country, data of 2016 (Pordata, 2019). The most polluting mode of transport (in absolute terms) is transport by car, followed by air, sea / river and, finally, rail. In Portugal, road transport accounts for more than 23.5% of total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. |
