Arquitectura e domínio: a fortificação de Juromenha como caso de estudo

Abstract

No alto de um promontório, implantado no limite da raia alentejana, surge a fortaleza de Juromenha - sentinela do Guadiana, memória de um passado de conflitos e tempos já esquecidos. O seu abandono e consequente degradação, reflectem-se hoje num extenso espelho de água, possibilitado pela construção da barragem do Alqueva e as transformações que esta potenciou sobre o território. Esta dissertação propõe-se a estudar e analisar a fortaleza de Juromenha e paralelamente, desenvolver uma intervenção arquitectónica no seu conjunto fortificado. Pretende-se enquadrar a fortaleza no contexto da arquitectura militar nacional e internacional, compreendendo como diferentes tipologias exercem domínio e controlo sobre o território e paisagem onde se inserem. Esta pesquisa serve o propósito de compreender qual o papel que a arquitectura militar pode desempenhar nos dias de hoje e como podemos actuar sobre este património com base nas premissas dos nossos tempos; Architecture and domain: the fortification of Juromenha as a case study Abstract: At the top of a promontory, located in the Alentejo border, lies the fortress of Juromenha - the sentinel of the Guadiana, a memory of a distressing past and times long forgotten. Today, It’s abandonment and following decay is seen reflected on a vast water mirror, made possible by the construction of the Alqueva dam and its transformations in the territory. This dissertation proposes to study and analyse the fortress of Juromenha, while developing an architectural intervention in its fortified system. It is intended to place the fortress in the context of the national and international military architecture, in order to understand how different typologies exercised their control and domain over the territory and landscape to which they belong. The purpose of this research is to comprehend the role that military architecture can have today and how can we act upon its heritage based on the premises of our times.
