O jardim de flores; O jardim de cor

Abstract

Esta dissertação tem como objetivo estudar a cor como elemento de valor fundamental da identidade do jardim, criando em paralelo uma base de trabalho com referências para a elaboração de planos de plantação. A investigação baseia-se na ligação de dois ofícios – a pintura e a arquitetura paisagista – centrando-se no período do final do século XIX, nas obras de Vincent van Gogh e Gertrude Jekyll. Apresentam-se teorias da cor então produzidas, realçando a sistematização realizada por Chevreul e a sua relevância para a evolução nas duas profissões, analisando esta evolução através do testemunho da correspondência de Van Gogh e do livro Colour Schemes for the Flower Garden de Gertrude Jekyll. Com os seus testemunhos diretos, procuram-se as suas metodologias de trabalho, enquanto criadores de conceitos que podem ser interpretados em novos jardins. A investigação termina com a elaboração de planos de plantação com base nas obras referidas, e a apresentação de um leque de plantas (paleta de cores) para a sua execução; ABSTRACT: This thesis has the purpose of studying colour as a key element of a garden producing, at the same time, a working base with references for new planting plans. A connection is made between two crafts – painting and landscape architecture – focusing this study on the late XIX century, on the work of Vincent van Gogh and Gertrude Jekyll. Colour theories, developed during this period, are presented, especially the one made by Chevreul, and the influence his studied had, relating it with the evolution of these two crafts and artists. The correspondence of Van Gogh and the Jekyll’s book Colour Schemes for the Flower Garden are the main source of information, for they are a personal testimony of their thoughts and work methods, and a source for future ways of creating gardens. Colour themes are organized from Van Gogh´s paintings, as reference for new planting plans, and from the knowledge of Jekyll´s vocabulary, her long gone Spring Garden at Munstead Wood is recreated using his colours and plants. To help the planting, a palette made of Jekyll´s flowers for the spring garden is made.
