*** - Abstract -High concentrations of nitrate in groundwater are a great concern in the European Union. For this purpose legislation for the nitrates from agriculture activities was put forward. The Portuguese government was delimited a Vulnerable Zone in the Algarve, in the Campina de Faro. The citrus crop is the main irrigation crop of the Algarve almost of the crop area is irrigated with trickle irrigation and the fertilization is by fertigation. In order to evaluate their monitoring was carried out. The experiments were carried id the year 2000 in a citrus orchard planted in April 1999. The irrigation and the fertilization were an automated trickle irrigation system. It was studied the nitrate leaching associated to a fertilization regime of three levels of nitrogen (15, 60 and 240 g per tree). In addition, the irrigation was similar on the 3 nitrogen levels tested. The irrigation was done daily in the summer and the fertigations was carried on all irrigations almost. The soil water content was monitored at 10, 30, 60 and 90 cm depth and the soil solution was collected in ceramic suction cups at 30 and 90 cm depth, to determine the nitrate content in the laboratory. We have followed the evolution of the nitrate concentration in the soil solution during the period autumn-winter and during the fertigation period which was from March to September. The drainage was determined from a water balance and the leaching of nitrates was calculated from the drainage below the root zone and the nitrate concentration observed on this zone. It was observed that the management of the irrigation was very important in the process, since the greater irrigation events were associated to the greater duration of irrigations. The wet-front reached a depth below the root zone where maybe occurs water losses for deep percolation and leaching. It was observed that the nitrate concentrations of the soil solution from the first level of fertilization did not exceed 50 mg and the leaching of N-NO3-was about 0.47% of the total applied. It addition, on the second level of N fertilization, the N-NO3 leached was low, only 2.1 % of the total N amount. Nitrates concentrations in the soil solution did not exceeded the 100 mg/l which maybe a good indicator for similar situations. However, nitrate concentrations exceeding 600 mg/l in the soil solution were observed from the third level of N fertilization and this result is maybe an application in excess.
