Aldeia da Estrela: adaptação à nova condição

Abstract

Há 7 anos que a Barragem de Alqueva tem ditado transformações drásticas no território do Baixo Alentejo e além fronteira – o que tem originado, aos aglomerados urbanos mais próximos do seu regolfo, inúmeros problemas de adaptação. Este é o ponto de partida da investigação. Procurando-se então reflectir sobre a temática da identidade de uma aldeia e de uma paisagem, escolheu-se como objecto de estudo um aglomerado onde é claramente possível identificar as transformações que ocorreram no seu contexto urbano, dado o dramatismo da sua proximidade com o plano de água: a aldeia da Estrela. Antes da elaboração desta tese, foram realizados inúmeros estudos sobre o Empreendimento de Fins Múltiplos do Alqueva, compreendendo o seu impacto no património cultural e ambiental. No entanto, não existiam, até à elaboração desta investigação, estudos específicos sobre a aldeia da Estrela e sobre a sua adaptação à nova condição. Todos os trabalhos realizados sobre as aldeias de Alqueva que incluem a aldeia da Estrela, elaborados pela EDIA, englobam-na no âmbito genérico das «aldeias ribeirinhas» do regolfo da barragem, analisando-a apenas como parte de uma grande área indiferenciada de desenvolvimento turístico do grande plano de água. Esta investigação, pelo contrário, tem como principal objectivo o estudo das especificidades e particularidades da aldeia, que são as que definem, precisamente, a sua identidade, e as que nos permitem construir as pautas de um possível desenvolvimento futuro. Para compreender a adaptação da Estrela à nova condição espacial e paisagística, foi elaborado um estudo comparativo, por temas, entre dois momentos: pré-Alqueva (1998) e pós-Alqueva (2009). Este estudo teve como base um levantamento fotográfico e cartográfico das duas realidades, a realização de pequenos inquéritos à população e decisores políticos regionais e, sobretudo, uma análise morfológica da malha urbana e paisagística, através da elaboração de vários mapas. Criou-se, deste modo, uma base documental através da qual é possível compreender o impacto que a nova condição espacial introduziu na pequena aldeia – tanto a nível paisagístico, como urbano. Por último, através da comparação com casos similares, elaborou-se uma reflexão crítica sobre o possível desenvolvimento da Estrela, tratando-se de compreender como é que esta aldeia, com todas as suas especificidades, poderá conviver com a nova paisagem que a água desenha e determina; ### Abstract: It has been seven years that the Alqueva Dam has gone through notable drastic territorial transformations in the Baixo Alentejo e surrounding areas – which has originated, to the surrounding urban community inumerous problems of adaptation. This is the starting point for the research. With this said, we will be reflecting on the thematics of identity of the community and its landscape, choosing as an object of study a community where it is clearly possible to identify the transformations that occurred in there urban context, giving way to the dramatization of its proximity with the water: the village of Estrela. Before the execution of this thesis, there were inumerous studies done about this joint venture with multiple purposes for Alqueva, understanding the impact on the environmental and cultural heritage. However, until the elaboration of this research there were no specific studies done about the village of Estrela and about its adaptation to its new conditions. All the work that has taken place about the villages of Alqueva, including the village of Estrela, elaborated by EDIA, has been encompassed under the broad rubric of “aldeias ribeirinhas” in the surrounding area of he dam, analyzing them as part of a big area that has been touristicly underdeveloped near the big plan of water. On the other hand, this research has as its main objective the study of specificities and particularities of the village, that are the aspects that identify this village´s identity, and what permit us in constructing the columns for a possible future development. For the understanding of the adaptation that Estrela had to go through to its new landscape condition, a comparative study was elaborated by themes, between to moments: pre-Alqueva (1998) and post-Alqueva (2009). This study was based on photographic and cartographic surveys done with both realities in mind. Small surveys were executed among the population, as well as regional and political decisions, and specifically a morphological analyses took place on the urban and landscape aspects, through the elaboration of various maps. Raising, at this point, a documental base where it is possible to understand the impact of these new conditions to this village – landscaping as well as urban. Lastly, through comparisons of similar cases, I elaborated a critical reflection about the possible development of Estrela, trying to understand how the village with its particularities can possibly co-exist with a new landscape that the water designs and determines.
