Abstract: | Resumo:
“Application of Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) for the
Characterization of Synthetic Fibers”
The purpose of this work was to apply the analytical technique of
Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) for the characterization of synthetic
fibers. Although the work is focused on acrylic fibers and derivatives, other
types of synthetic fibers and some fibers of natural origin were also studied.
This study was complemented with analysis by infrared spectroscopy. It was
found that it was possible to distinguish between fibers of different nature and in
some cases from acrylic fibers of different origins.
An analytical technique based on DSC was also developed for the
purpose of monitoring the degree of oxidation / stabilization of acrylic fiber
precursors in the first step of the process of thermal conversion to carbon fibers.
This was complemented with analysis of the mechanical properties of the fibers
and testing of Limiting Oxygen Index.
It was found that, with the extent of oxidation the density, elongation and
aromatization of the oxidized fiber increased, reducing the heat release. |
