Os cladódios frescos não necessitam de preparação prévia, e a sua abundância em zonas áridas e de baixos recursos, podem viabilizar o seu uso na limpeza de águas; Abstract: Valorization of the culture of Prickly Pear (Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill) produced in Alentejo: fruits and cladodes. Climate change, the demand for natural and healthy products, have highlighted the cultivation of the prickly pear, having increased its area in Portugal. The present work aims to valorize the culture of the varieties produced in Alentejo. Storage trials were carried out with fruits of "red" and "orange" varieties, which allow stating that it is possible to store them for 30 days, at 2 °C and 90% RH, with the tested biodegradable packaging. The cladodes can be preserved up to 85 days at room temperature with the use of the biodegradable packaging. The cladodes show potential as food for human diet, and as supplemental feed for livestock. The use of cladodes as a natural flocculant is promising in treatment of water, reaching values of 4 NTU of turbidity. Fresh cladodes require no prior preparation, and their abundance in arid and low-resource areas may render their use in water cleaning feasible. |
