Literacia em cancro nos jovens universitários e as motivações para o voluntariado

Abstract

Este estudo tem como objetivos, apurar a literacia em cancro, caracterizar as motivações para o voluntariado e explorar possíveis associações entre as variáveis, relacionando-as com os dados sociodemográficos. A amostra foi constituída por 308 estudantes universitários, com 18 ou mais anos. Aplicaram-se um questionário sociodemográfico, o Students Knowledge and Perceptions about Cancer e o Inventário das Motivações para o Voluntariado. Os resultados indicaram níveis superiores de literacia em cancro no género feminino, estudantes envolvidos em voluntariado e das áreas de ciências médicas e da saúde. As mulheres atribuem mais valor às funções experiência, valores e crescimento no voluntariado. A correlação entre literacia em cancro e motivações para o voluntariado mostrou ser significativa para as funções experiência e valores. Os resultados do estudo são particularmente pertinentes para o campo da educação, sublinhando a necessidade de estratégias que visem a prevenção da doença e a formação de jovens adultos em literacia oncológica; - Cancer Literacy among Youth University Students and Motivations for Volunteering Abstract: The objective of this study is to evaluate the level of cancer literacy, characterise motivations for volunteering and explore possible associations between the variables, relating them to sociodemographic data. The sample comprised 308 college students aged 18 or above. A sociodemographic questionnaire, the Students Knowledge and Perceptions about Cancer test and the Volunteer Functions Inventory were administered. The findings indicated higher levels of cancer literacy among females, students involved in volunteering and those in the medical and health sciences. Women placed more importance to experience, values and growth functions in volunteering. The correlation between cancer literacy and motivations for volunteering proved to be significant for the experience and values functions. The findings of this study are particularly pertinent to the field of education, underscoring the necessity of strategies aimed at the prevention of the disease and the training of young adults in cancer literacy.
