Effect of heat stress on the conception rate of Holstein-Friesian cows.
This work evaluated the interaction between Temperature and Humidity Index – THI (heat stress meter), with the conception rate, an essential reproductive parameter for assessing the fertility of a dairy farm. Data was collected during the year 2022 on a Holstein-Friesian farm for milk production in the municipality of Castelo Branco, with the primary objective of studying the effect of this interaction in the different months and with secondary objectives to evaluate the existence of several factors that could negatively influence the conception rate in periods of heat stress (in summer), such as parity, stage of the lactation curve, type of artificial insemination protocol and the number of services per cow. The results suggest a significant negative correlation between heat stress and the conception rate, with a statistical significance of p=0.004, which was established at p<0.05. Thus, it is essential to pay more attention to this aspect in the future. |
