The Religious Heritage in the City of Évora: Proposal for an Inventory Methodology
Religion has always presented a close relationship with the communities, through the layout and experiences of the cities. However, what
most influenced them were the Religious Buildings and Customs, attributing in this research greater attention to the Christian Religion and to
Europe.
Évora, like hundreds of other cities in Europe, was no exception in the relationship between Religion and City, because, since its
foundation, different societies have developed and punctuated the city with and from Religious Buildings, especially Christian ones.
This Dissertation aims to demonstrate the impact and marks left by the Church in the Historic Center of the City of Évora, as well as the
identification and location of its Buildings and Religious Elements.
It became possible to quantify them through an Inventory (Architectural Typologies and Other Elements), leading us to a revealing number of
the strong presence of the Church in the city, having identified 281 religious elements (Buildings and others), of which only 248 remain. |
