Beyond hands: non-manual markers in Portuguese Sign Language
The Portuguese Sign Language (PSL) is the language used in the national territory by the deaf community, which is composed not only by deaf people, but also by all those who, in some way, use the language either for professional or family reasons.
The innumerable gestures/signs that constitute the language are, just like what happens with all natural languages, constituted by minimal units that are designated as cherems. In this work we intend to study in detail one of these questions: Non-Manual Expression (NME) and understand in what ways it is present in PSL.
Therefore, in this work we intend to explain and distinguish the different forms/distributions that ENM can take within the LSP. We will observe the cherological, morphological and suprasegmental value. To this end, data was collected through digital platforms and, therefore, hypotheses and proposals formulations were discussed with deaf natives and also with professionals in the field of interpretation, considering their linguistic background and knowledge.
Ultimately, we categorize the different types of ENM and describe their contexts of use as well as the grammatical values that are manifested. |
