Poder, dinastia, e governo de Portugal e do império: o caso do infante D. Luís (1506-1555)

Abstract

Esta tese examina o percurso político do infante D. Luís (1506-1555) no contexto do governo do reino de Portugal e do seu império na primeira metade do século XVI. O problema do destino a dar aos secundogénitos régios, bem como a outros membros da família real, tem alimentado grande debate no seio dos estudos das casas reais e principescas nos períodos medieval e moderno. Apesar da existência de divergências pontuais entre o rei e o infante, já reconhecidas pela historiografia, é na associação entre a cooperação com a monarquia e o percurso político deste infante que assenta a ideia central desta tese. Defende-se que D. Luís soube geralmente acatar o lugar de infante e grande senhor do reino que a estratégia da monarquia lhe foi reservando, ainda que não de forma totalmente planeada, mas sim de acordo com o desenrolar dos eventos num contexto europeu de particular convulsão política, militar e religiosa. Depreende-se, portanto, que cada contexto possui as suas próprias vicissitudes e que o teor das relações de D. Luís com a monarquia estaria dependente não só de tais vicissitudes, mas também de factores que incluíam a idade do próprio infante, as prerrogativas em que estaria investido, a extensão do seu próprio poder senhorial, e o capital social acumulado entre os actores de uma diversa teia inter-relacional cortesã onde se movia. A exploração estrutural destes factores nos capítulos desta tese permitirá ir além da resposta ao problema central do destino e percurso político de D. Luís. De igual modo, tal exploração contribuirá para a proposta de um modelo de interpretação do papel dos secundogénitos da dinastia de Avis para o governo do reino e do império; Power, dynasty, and government of Portugal and the empire: the case of Infante Luís (1506-1555) Abstract: This thesis examines the political career of the Infante Luís (1506-1555) within the context of the government of the kingdom of Portugal and its empire in the first half of the sixteenth century. The question of what type of career was supposed to be given to younger cadets by the monarchy, as to other royal family members, has been fertile ground for debate across the field of royal and princely houses in medieval and early modern times. Despite the existence of differences between king and Infante, already recognized by the historiography, it is in the association between cooperation with the monarchy and the specific political path of this Infante that the central idea of this thesis is based. It will be argued that Luís generally accepted the place attributed to him by the monarchy as an infante and great lord of the realm, even if not in a premeditated manner, but in view of a peculiar European context of political, military, and religious turmoil. Each context had its own complexities and the relationship between Luís and the Portuguese monarchy was not only conditioned by them, but also on factors such as the his age, the prerogatives in which he was being invested, the extent of his seigniorial power, and the social capital accumulated through contacts achieved within a diverse inter-relational courtly web. The structural exploration of such factors will allow to go beyond the answer to the problem of the destiny and the political career of Luís. Likewise, this will ultimately contribute to a proposal of a model of interpretation of the role of the royal cadets of the dynasty of Avis for the government of the realm and of the empire.
