ABSTRACT: The present study has as its starting point the results of the National Assessment, designated in S. Tomé and Principe of Large Scale Assessment in Basic Education (AALEB), in the Portuguese Language and Mathematics subjects in the academic year 2015/2016 and the evaluations since these results are contrasting. It also seeks to characterize evaluative practices in the classroom, in order to understand the context and identify possibilities for improvement. For the purpose of this study, the adopted methodology followed an interpretive paradigm with a qualitative approach. A bibliographic review was carried out in order to deepen the work leading to the collection and analysis of the data obtained. With this study, it is expected to contribute to the definition of strategies that can lead to the improvement of teachers' practices in the classroom, since the information related to the external evaluation shows that the level of student learning is below the desirable level. The data collected consisted mainly of the interview and observation of classes of 6 teachers who teach the 4th class classes of the schools where the study was carried out. Conducting the study led to the following conclusions: Firstly, it should be noted that teachers do not know much about the evaluation process and are not aware of their results; on the other hand, there seems to exist an installed tendency to support / teach students during formative and summative evaluations, making students feel conditioned in developing external assessments. In our opinion, the directorates of the Ministry of Education and of the schools received the results but did not proceed to the proper disclosure of them to the teachers. Therefore, it is important to suggest that in future evaluations a work team be created to think about strategies to improve the problems detected.
