Surgery and medicine of small animals
This report was completed in the scope of Integrated Masters in Veterinary Medicine of the University of Évora internship’s which is divided in two parts. The first part consists of an analysis of the casuistry followed during the traineeship held at Hospital Veterinário das Laranjeiras, in Lisbon. The second part is composed by a literature review about canine hypoadrenocorticism, or Addison's disease, accompanied by the presentation and discussion of a clinical case alluding to the theme. Hypoadrenocorticism is an uncommon endocrine disease characterized by deficiency in glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids. Hypoadrenocorticism is classified as primary or secondary and typical or atypical. Notwithstanding the difficult diagnosis due to the similarity with other affections, the comprehension of the pathophysiology of the disease may impel the veterinarian to perform an ACTH stimulation test which definitively confirms the diagnosis. The treatment, when well monitored, provides a good quality of life to the dog. |
