Abstract: This article aims to give a map of the situation of Portuguese formal education to theatre today, at University, polytechnic education and secondary schools. It is based on a definition of theatre as performing art, but also considers literary based courses, so-called Theatre or Art Studies, which are taught by traditional universities. This study takes in account the historical dimension of the case due to the relevance of the political changes that occurred in 1974, moment when the number of candidates to a career at theatre increased a lot, looking for a professional education. On the other hand, the introduction of the orientations stipulated by the process of Bologna modified models of education in Arts and originated the creation of new courses at University.
