The Portuguese Misericórdias are the oldest social benefaction houses in Portugal, being also the first form of a Portuguese social entrepreneurship.
It has been observed a substantial increase in poverty and ageing of the general population. The Government, without the ability to satisfy the needs of the population, delegates that task to the Misericórdias and other social enterprises.
This thesis tries to evaluate the financial sustainability of the Misericórdias in Setúbal District and to map ways in which one can identify alternatives for future funding. To achieve this aim, an economic and financial analysis was performed at 16 Misericórdias at Setúbal, based in their Financial Statements from 2005 to 2009 years. From the total of the analyzed institutions, it has come to the conclusion that the majority has its sustainability in jeopardy if they proceed with the current management model.
This dissertation also wants to contribute to this area of study and to incite new studies about this theme. |
