Caracterização e eficiência técnica de explorações citrícolas da Região Algarve

Abstract

O setor citrícola desempenha um papel essencial na estrutura e no peso da agricultura da região do Algarve. A competitividade nacional e internacional das empresas deste setor depende, entre outros fatores, da sua eficiência do ponto de vista da produção. Neste sentido, os objetivos desta dissertação são analisar a rendibilidade média e de investimento das atividades citrícolas, avaliar a eficiência técnica e identificar alguns dos fatores explicativos da ineficiência para um conjunto de explorações citrícolas da região. Foram utilizados dados primários através da recolha de coeficientes técnicos para caracterizar as contas de atividade e de investimento e através da seleção de uma amostra de empresas agrícolas algarvias, cuja atividade principal é a citricultura e pertencentes à RICA para medir a eficiência técnica. Concluiu-se que as empresas estudadas apresentam uma eficiência técnica elevada, e que a maior parte da ineficiência técnica se deve à ineficiência de escala, sendo desejável um aumento na sua dimensão física e económica; ABSTRACT: The citrus sector plays an essential role in the structure and weight of agriculture in the Algarve region. The competitiveness of national and international farms in this field depends, among other factors, on the technical efficiency. In this sense, the objectives of this dissertation are to analyze the profitability of the investment on the activities of citrus, evaluate the technical efficiency and identify some of the explanatory factors of inefficiency for a set of citrus farms in the region. Primary data were used through the collection of technical coefficients to characterize the budgets and investment of the citrus activity and the selection of a set of farms from the RICA data base to measure the levels of technical efficiency. It was concluded that the studied farms have a high level of technical efficiency, and that most of the technical inefficiency is due to the inefficiency of scale. An increase on physical and economic size of the farms is desirable in order to improve their levels of efficiency.
