### Abstract - Tourist information professionals are key-actors in the connection between
cultural tourists, heritage, local communities and all the hierarchy in the tourism sector.
Tourism as an (inter)cultural phenomenon implies cultural exchange, therefore is
important to understand the tourist guide role and if the exchange of cultures becomes
actually cultural change.
The present study characterizes the professional behaviour of tourist guides in a
cultural tourism environment and the intercultural competences they develop –
knowledge, attitudes and behaviour – to have success in their job.
It includes a theoretical part about intercultural tourism and the tourist guide
profession, and an empirical research, in which three techniques of investigation were
applied: two questionnaires (to 121 guides and 682 tourists), direct observation of 50
guides in a working context, the Coach Museum, in Lisbon, and interviews to 13 tourist
guides, among them three decision-makers of professional associations. |
