/ Abstract -
In the extent of a Social Identity Perspective and considering the facial behaviour as
information in social and relational contexts, the present thesis researches the regulation
of facial behaviour in the salience of identities. In the study 1, two television interviews
with a politician were analyzed. The results indicate associative relations between facial
actions and identitary salience (social and personal), with expressive contrasts. In the
study 2, interviews to Portugal’s Selection Fans were carried throughout the Euro 2004.
We used the increase in salience of social identity in a natural context, to observe the
modifications of facial behaviour in laboratory. We also induced the salience of
personal identity for comparison with other observations. We identified cognitive and
affective markers and self-presentation strategies in the facial behaviour. In the salience
of social identity, there is an increase in cognitive indicators, monitoring, status,- and
behaviour uniformity. According to the different affective contexts studied, the results
point to different strategies of self-presentation. In the negative context, there are more
modifications of cognitive indicators, in the positive context there are more alterations
of affective indicators. We also observed expressive contrasts between different
saliencies. |
