AND SURGERY IN SMALL ANIMALS Abstract: This report refers to the five months small animal practice and surgery internship performed at the Vetoeiras. It is divided into three sections: casuistry, monography and a clinical case about discospondylitis. Discospondylitis is a rare cronic infectious disease affecting the intervertebral disc and the adjacent vertebral endplates. The infection usually reaches the vertebral column by hemathogenous spread (most frequently bacterial). The most common agents are Staphylococci spp. Discospondylitis´ diagnosis is mainly radiographic and the agent can be reached by disc material cultures or urine and blood cultures. Advanced imaging techniques like computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging can be used for diagnosis. Medical therapy succeeds in approximately 76% of the cases. In some cases surgery is necessary to stabilize the spine or debride the altered tissue. The report concludes with a description of a clinical case involving discospondylitis with an L7-S1 disc herniation and dorsal laminectomy.
