The Comic in Beckett’s Language: Repetition and Other Discourse Markers in the Theatre of the Absurd
Abstract:
This dissertation analyzes the function of various discourse markers – namely repetition, cyclical language, and silence—in the construction of the comic within the aesthetics of the Theatre of the Absurd in the work of Samuel Beckett. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach that brings together literary theory, discourse linguistics, philosophy, and humor studies, this study seeks to understand how these discourse markers contribute both to the production of laughter and to the expression of the absurdity of the human condition. The analysis focuses on the plays Waiting for Godot and Endgame, in which recurring patterns of structural and discursive repetition can be identified, as well as the systematic use of pauses and silence. The textual analysis demonstrates that these elements function simultaneously as mechanisms that disrupt communication and as comic devices based on automatism and the frustration of expectation. It is concluded that the comic in Beckett does not serve an escapist function; rather, it constitutes an aesthetic and philosophical strategy that confronts the audience with emptiness, stagnation, and the absurdity of existence, transforming laughter into an act of recognition and resistance. |
