| Abstract: | This study compares public policies and programmes promoting active ageing between Extremadura (Spain) and the Alentejo and Centro (Portugal) regions within the EUROACE area. The aim is to map and analyse initiatives, identify trends, participation mechanisms and innovation factors to improve the quality of life of older people.
The research uses an exploratory approach with qualitative data analysis. A sample of 36 initiatives (12 per region) was selected, and a mapping tool was developed to identify areas of intervention, participation mechanisms and innovation factors. Data was collected from publicly available information.
It found that social economy organisations and public bodies are the main supporters of active ageing initiatives. Health and participation are the primary focus areas, while safety is less emphasised. Common participation mechanisms include workshops, learning groups, and physical activity programmes. Innovation factors involve lifelong learning, community interventions, and wellness apps.
In conclusion, the regions show similarities and differences in dealing with ageing and the participatory role of older people. The study underlines the need for security programmes and the promotion of social and political participation of older people. Innovative practices and effective partnerships are crucial for improving the quality of life of older people in these regions. |
