Using Web-based technology in ELF contexts

Title: Using Web-based technology in ELF contexts
Authors: Guerra, Luis
Editors: Bayyurt, Yasemin; Illés, Éva
Abstract: This chapter aims to provide a critical analysis of current classroom web-based technology through an ELF-aware paradigm. It takes into consideration how an ELF-aware approach may be implemented, adapted or constructed through different web-based tools, namely text-based, audio, video, multimodal production, digital storytelling, website creation, knowledge organisation and sharing, social networking and web-conferencing tools to enhance classroom learning in the use of blended, face-to-face, or online learning. The chapter also includes the case study of a project whose outcome is an online journal written and edited by undergraduate university students who are users of ELF. In sum, this chapter hopes to assist ELT teachers with pedagogical alternatives which rely on the use of innovative technological tools aiming at developing learners’ communicative skills for language use in ELF contexts inside and outside the classroom.

EFL teachers’ journey from ELF-aware perceptions to ELF-aware teaching

Title: EFL teachers’ journey from ELF-aware perceptions to ELF-aware teaching
Authors: Guerra, Luis
Editors: Kordia, Stephania
Abstract: EFL classrooms have traditionally promoted a native-speaker perspective associated with
standard British and/or American English, along with these nationalistic views of culture. This
viewpoint has been perpetuated by (inter)national textbook publishers, often limiting
learners’ exposure to other varieties and cultures where English is used to communicate
across different scenarios. Although EFL teachers widely recognize the use of ELF in many
domains, the difficulty remains in how to implement ELF-aware lessons in their contexts.
Consequently, Continuous Professional Development (CPD) courses can play a key role in
promoting greater awareness of ELF and how ELF awareness may be implemented to equip
learners for real-life communication. This article focuses on the initial modules of the CPD
course developed by the ENRICH Erasmus+ project, and explores ELF, identity and use,
ownership, Standard vs. Non-standard English, intercultural communication, among other
relevant concepts. Subsequently, some practical examples of ELF-aware tasks are presented.
Ranging across different educational levels, these samples illustrate ELF-aware tasks where
issues of linguistic and cultural diversity are promoted. Additionally, this article examines
Portuguese teachers’ feedback from the CPD course, with the purpose of gauging their overall
understanding of ELF and ELF-awareness in ELT.

Findings of ECRs’ research-related needs analysis

Title: Findings of ECRs’ research-related needs analysis
Authors: Guerra, Luis
Editors: Oral, Yasemin; Inal, Dilek
Abstract: The purpose of this chapter is to identify, analyze, and discuss the !ndings regarding the needs
and personal understanding of research activities of eighty-six Early Career Researchers
(ECRs). First, it examines qualitative and quantitative data from an online survey concerning
the ECRs’ needs analysis and their perceptions of research activities. Data are divided into the
following sections: information regarding the ECR’s communities; cultures of research; research
governance and choices; researcher positionality and reflexivity; and personal understanding
of research activities. It then goes on to discuss the issues and emerging themes related to the
data presented and discussed in the previous sections. In essence, one of the main goals of the
EUREDIE project is to identify the needs of ECRs so they can plan and carry out research proj-
ects that are sensitive to the inherent interculturality and represent diversity, regardless of the
speci!c subject they investigate. By and large, this goal is ful!lled through the examination and
discussion of the needs analysis survey.

Diálogos de amor na Comédia Filodemo de Camões

Title: Diálogos de amor na Comédia Filodemo de Camões
Authors: Esteves, Elisa Rosa Pisco Nunes
