population
Abstract:
The aims of this research were to validate a short scale (HPPI) to assess the High Place
Phenomenon and characterize it in a sample of Portuguese adults, consisting of 204
community adults, aged between 18 and 65 years old, evaluating its relationship with a
set of relevant sociodemographic, clinical and psychological variables. It was found that
individuals at risk of suicide scored significantly higher on the HPPI than the group
without risk. A sample of 60 skydivers also participated, and no statistically significant
differences were found compared to the community sample, after controlling for
covariates in the ANCOVA model. Using a Hierarchical Multiple Linear Regression
model, four sociodemographic variables (being male, being unemployed, having a
religion, having a psychiatric disorder diagnosis) and three psychological variables
(sensation seeking, suicidal behaviors, and the avoidance dimension in attachment)
made a significant contribution to explaining variance in the HPPI.

Title: Comparative study of pozzolanic mortars of the imperial roman period: examples from italy, Portugal, and Greece
Authors: Abitbol, Jochanan
Abstract: This study offers a comparative archaeometric investigation of pozzolanic mortars from three
Imperial Roman contexts — a taberna in Ostia Antica (Italy), Villa Santa Suzana (Portugal) and
the Villa of Herodes Atticus close to Doliana (Greece) — aiming to link technological choices
to local resources and function inside a structure. A total of nine samples were characterized through complementary methods: macroscopic and stereomicroscopic description, granulometry, X-ray diffraction (XRD) for mineralogy, SEM-EDS for microstructure and elemental
composition, Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy and Loss on Ignition for bulk chemistry, ion
chromatography for soluble salts, and multivariate statistics (PCA, PERMANOVA, hierarchical clustering, correlation analysis) to synthesise trends.
The results demonstrate a consistent technological intention to produce pozzolanic mortars
across all sites, though achieved through different material strategies. Analytical data show
that Ostian mortars employ natural volcanic pozzolana, whereas those from Villa Santa Suzana
and the Villa of Herodes Atticus achieve hydraulic properties through artificial pozzolana,
crushed bricks and tiles. Variations in granulometry, porosity, and binder-to-aggregate ratios align with functional roles inside the structures, distinguishing plasters, structural mortars, and pavements. Multivariate statistics reinforce these patterns, revealing standardized
practices within each site and marked compositional contrasts between them. These findings
illustrate how Roman builders balanced empire-wide technological knowledge with pragmatic
adaptations to local resources.
These results underscore the interplay between shared Roman technological knowledge and
regionally adapted practices. The study highlights the value of multi-method archaeometric
approaches for understanding ancient construction technologies and provides a basis for future
provenance research and conservation strategies.

Title: Análise dos hábitos alimentares do lobo-ibérico numa área do núcleo populacional Peneda-Gerês: efeitos dos fatores ecológicos e antropogénicos
Este estudo contribui para a compreensão da ecologia trófica deste predador e para desenvolver medidas de conservação e mitigação de conflitos; - Analysis oh the feeding habits of the Iberian wolf in an area of the core population Peneda/Gerês: effects of ecological and anthropogenic factors
Abstract:
In Portugal, the Iberian wolf is currently restricted to mountainous areas in the central and northern regions, due to habitat degradation, scarcity of wild prey, and direct persecution associated with conflicts with human activities, particularly livestock depredation. This study analyzed the ecological, anthropogenic, seasonal, and individual factors influencing wolf diet in an area of the Peneda/Gerês population nucleus. Hair identification and the application of multinomial logistic regression models revealed a diet dominated by domestic ungulates (66.48%). Sheep density and agricultural areas were associated with a significant reduction in the predation of goats and wild boar. The remaining variables reflected patterns consistent with the opportunistic behavior of this predator. Comparisons between sexes and packs showed no significant differences, whereas seasonal variations were detected. This study contributes to a better understanding of the trophic ecology of the Iberian wolf and supports the development of conservation and conflict mitigation measures.
