Abstract: From the Middle Ages to the present day, epidemics and other infectious diseases&#xD;
of high prevalence in the population have had an undeniable and very strong&#xD;
impact on society. The occurrence and development of diseases such as the&#xD;
black plague, malaria, influenza, smallpox, syphilis, typhus, cholera, AIDS,&#xD;
and covid19 have determined, over time, some of the major social and cultural&#xD;
transformations in history.&#xD;
In this paper, through the prism of Western classical music, I will try to highlight&#xD;
some of these transformations. I will focus on the musical representation of these&#xD;
times of health crisis, including records of problems and symptoms related to&#xD;
various diseases in specific musical works, to which I will allude. I will also&#xD;
refer to the impact that epidemics and other infectious-contagious diseases had&#xD;
on institutions and diverse cultural dynamics, as well as to the marks they left on&#xD;
the life and work of composers of different genres, geographies, and historical&#xD;
periods.</description>

Abstract: O I Congresso Guitarrístico de Braga foi realizado no mês de setembro de 2022 no Edifício dos Congregados, na Universidade do Minho. O evento científico foi organizado pelo Grupo de Investigação em Artes (GiArtes), Núcleo de Investigação em Música (NIM), e contou com os apoios do Centro de Estudos Humanísticos (CEHUM), Escola de Letras, Artes e Ciências Humanas (ELACH) e do Departamento de Música, Universidade do Minho. Teve como principal objetivo colocar em evidência temas atuais de investigação sobre guitarra clássica, focando quatro eixos temáticos: 1) A investigação em performance musical no caso da guitarra: o estado da arte; 2) Discussão sobre aspetos técnico/interpretativos do repertório para guitarra; 3) A guitarra no contexto da música de câmara: repertórios e questões atuais; 4) O ensino da guitarra clássica nos vários níveis e contextos: questões teóricas e pedagógicas. Este evento deu lugar à elaboração do dossier temático do presente volume da Revista Diacrítica — Contextos, práticas e repertório(s) para Guitarra Clássica: perspetivas e temas atuais de investigação, que inclui nove artigos internacionais representativos que evidenciam a vitalidade e o interesse em torno das múltiplas abordagens à Guitarra Clássica, contribuindo para o conhecimento nesta área específica. Na introdução ao volume são ainda apresentados os artigos que compõem a secção Varia e que exploram temas literários e culturais.</description>

Abstract: Experts confirm that effective learning of works to be performed on the violin is only possible through&#xD;
memorization. This research proposes alternative strategies to facilitate and make the work of&#xD;
memorizing violin pieces easier and more effective. The proposed strategies were applied to a sample&#xD;
of ten master's students in violin in music education, using systematic observation and the design-&#xD;
based method. Data analysis was carried out using descriptive and inferential statistics, concluding&#xD;
that the proposed memorization strategies can be effective and can facilitate the memorization&#xD;
process.</description>

      <title>Non-formal Learning as a conduit between students' social world and Formal Learning: The 'Rhythm Wave' Case Study</title>

Abstract: This paper examines non-formal learning of rhythm in the context of an extra-curricular&#xD;
percussion group “Rhythm Wave” that formed at UHI (University of the Highlands and Islands)&#xD;
Perth College, Scotland, UK. Rhythm Wave, that has mutated in the present day into a&#xD;
community music group out with the formal sector, has been in existence for thirty years.&#xD;
And in the formal education context that is the nexus of this research, non-formal learning&#xD;
(NFL) and teaching ran contiguously with the instrumental pedagogy of the college’s popular&#xD;
music curricula. The ensemble started with Brazilian Samba instrumentation and a tiny cell of&#xD;
learners but grew to encompass varied rhythm styles and textures whilst developing a&#xD;
network of alumni mentors who honed their musical and social skills through both peer and&#xD;
musical leadership interactions. Key aspects of rhythm learning that occurred in this&#xD;
ensemble have emerged from semi-structured interviews and observations and the&#xD;
enhancement of formal curricular learning of rhythm is evident in the findings. This includes&#xD;
aspects shared with Green’s (2001, 2008, 2010, 2014) research into popular music practices&#xD;
and with the ongoing development of non-formal world music pedagogy (Murtadza; Walden;&#xD;
in Wright, Beynon, &amp; Younker: 2016).</description>
