Authors: Martín Miguel, Iván; Parraca, Jose A.; Escudero Tena, Adrián; Batalha, Nuno; Muñoz, Diego

Effects of sleep restriction on physical performance test among formative youth-high level padel players

Title: Effects of sleep restriction on physical performance test among formative youth-high level padel players
Authors: Díaz-García, Jesús; Parraca, Jose A.; Batalha, Nuno; Llanos Muñoz, Rubén; Ramírez, Iván; López-Gajardo, Miguel Angel
Abstract: It has been shown that playing padel tournaments impairs the quantity and quality
of players' sleep during competition weeks. This study checks the effects of sleep
restriction on the physical performance of youth padel players. Voluntarily, 18 youthelite padel players (17.34 ± 1.36) participated in this randomized experimental trial. The
Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was previously recorded to establish experimental
conditions, which were a normal sleep protocol versus a sleep restriction protocol (i.e.,
50% of normal sleep time). Following both conditions, reaction time using a
psychomotor performance test, upper body power using overhead and lateral medicine
ball throws, and specific agility and speed using a previously validated padel-specific test
were recorded. Results indicated that sleep restriction significantly impaired visuomotor
reaction time (p < .001) and padel-specific agility and speed (p < .001) but did not cause
significant changes in strength compared to normal sleep (p = 0.34). Induced sleep
restriction impairs two complex tasks such as padel-specific speed and agility as well as
visuomotor reaction time. In contrast, the simple strength task was not impaired by this
condition. An important practical application derived from the study is that coaches
should implement sleep facilitation strategies among players during tournaments.

Abstract: As stated by the United Nations (2013), children have the right to play, defined as playing without adult or external rules, or predefined aims. Its mere purpose is to enjoy oneself, alone or with others. Yet the benefits of play on children’s physical and mental health development are significant. Playing in outdoor areas, like at schoolyards, has an added value, as outdoor play gives children the opportunity to meet one another, but also fresh air, sunlight, and increased physical activity. Question is to what extent playgrounds are based on principles of equity: is a playground accessible for all children, taking into account different needs, preferences and capacities, as is the case for autistic children. In this paper we discuss what basic principles can be used in designing “fair” playgrounds, where all children (with and without autism) can feel safe, welcome, and flourish, eager to explore and experience a sense of freedom and autonomy.

Effects of a psychomotor intervention on psychomotor profile in institutionalized elderly with mild dependency

Title: Effects of a psychomotor intervention on psychomotor profile in institutionalized elderly with mild dependency
Authors: Morais, Ana; Pereira, Filipa; Almeida, Gabriela
Abstract: Institutionalized elders tend to have a higher dependency on the performance of basic and instrumental activities of daily living, as well as a higher percentage of cognitive defcit and poorer psychomotor performance. This short paper intends to analyze the impact of a psychomotor intervention in psychomotor profle and three specifc components - motor prevalence, cognitive prevalence, and physical constraints, assessed by the Examen Géronto-Psychomoteur (EGP) adapted for Portuguese population. The sample consisted of nine elders (M=77.44yrs; SD=8.99) institutionalized in a nursing home residence, all with mild dependency and cognitive defcit. The intervention was conducted for 30 group sessions. Each session was structured in fve moments: reality orientation activity, warm-up, core activity, cool-down and fnishing ritual. Data analysis was performed with descriptive analysis and Wilcoxon statistical test. The results from data comparison in pre and post-intervention showed signifcant improvements in the psychomotor profle and in the cognitive prevalence component. It was also checked the differences in each elder person for the studied variables. This study aimed to enhance the understanding of the importance of psychomotor intervention in geriatric care, particularly when integrated within a multidisciplinary rehabilitation team.
