Authors: Conde, Antónia Fialho
Abstract: Jean Délumeau, in consecrating the
History of Religions as a field of histo-
riographical debate, emphasises two
lines of force in the action of the
Church in the Catholic Reformation:
the reinforcement of its internal struc-
tures and the defence of the paradigms
of sanctity and piety. It is in this con-
text that we shall seek to address,
based on the Cistercian community of
S. Bento de Cástris (located in Évora, a
city that knew similar examples), the
role of women's communities as spaces
of artistic commissioning, preserving
the Tridentine dictates. This commis-
sioning, both of religious women and
of prelates, in addition to the daily
demands of maintaining the built spa-
ce, took place in a more structured way
in the community we are dealing with
from the first decades of the 16th
century, continuing in the following
centuries through painting, carving,
tiles, goldsmithery, carpentry, organ
commissioning and liturgical books
and manuscripts intended, the latter,
for the Choir.// Jean Délumeau, ao consagrar a História
das Religiões como campo de debate
historiográfico, sublinha duas linhas de
força na actuação da Igreja na Reforma
Católica: o fortalecimento das suas es-
truturas internas e a defesa dos para-
digmas da santidade e da piedade. É à
luz deste contexto que procuraremos
abordar, a partir da comunidade cister-
ciense de S. Bento de Cástris (localizada
em Évora, cidade que conheceu exem-
plos similares), o papel das comunidades
femininas enquanto espaços de enco-
menda artística, perpetuando os dita-
mes tridentinos. Essa encomenda, tanto
de religiosas particulares como de pre-
ladas, além das exigências do quotidia-
no em relação à manutenção do espaço
edificado, teve lugar de forma mais
estruturada na comunidade de que nos
ocupamos logo nas primeiras décadas
do século XVI, prolongando-se nos sé-
culos posteriores através da pintura,
talha, azulejaria, ourivesaria, carpinta-

Abstract: This study addresses the origins of the symbolism of the vine and wine. Considering its cultural evolution, the underlying models of archaic behaviours in human societies—encompassing beliefs and rituals—are likely to have influenced this symbolism. Although these early moments are not always easy to recount, there would have been initially violent rituals involved in timeless myths. Later records, however, testify to the gradual transformation of both symbolism and rituals. Religious representations mark a transition in meanings, highlighting the legacy from Mesopotamia and, most notably, what is described in fundamental books of the Old Testament. The connection between the symbolism of wine and agricultural activity and peasant tasks is evident. During fruitful harvest periods, the grape harvest and good grapes symbolised the peak of abundance in the fields, a reward for fruitful labour; also serving as an occasion for celebration. It is well known that great attention was paid to the cycles of flowering, withering, and rebirth of ecosystems—later mystically explained through the cycles of birth, death, and rebirth—paralleling the journey of divine destinies, a theme present in ancient poems and recitations.

Abstract: The Colégio do Espírito Santo, where the University of Évora was founded in 1559, has known an increasing attention regarding architectural and decorative critique and especially the 18th Century tiles. It is intended to highlight one of its themes: the views of China or chinoiserie, a trend and original recreation circa 1750, resulting from the visual culture of the time by composing itself on models that arrived in Portugal in famous albums of engravings, in circumstances presented below.
